Let’s be honest—semiconductor fabs are energy hogs. Most of that power disappears into thermal processing and drying, and if you’re still using old-school convection ovens, you’re basically paying to heat up a giant metal box and a bunch of air. It’s a waste. If you want to actually move the needle on your carbon footprint, you’ve got to stop heating the room and start heating the wafer. That’s where infrared (IR) comes in. The problem with the old way Think about a standard drying cycle. You’re heating the entire chamber, the walls, the air… everything. It’s slow and inefficient. We switched to shortwave IR lamps because they don’t bother with the “middleman.” Instead of warming the air to warm the wafer, IR radiation hits the surface directly. It’s fast. Really fast. When we run the numbers in an energy audit, we usually see standby energy loss drop by 30% to 50%. That’s a massive win for the electric bill and the planet. Getting the tech right To make this work, we use high-wattage quartz lamps. The cool part? We can zone them. You don’t have to blast the whole thing; you can tweak the power in specific areas so you don’t end up with hot spots. We keep things steady using SCR controllers that switch fast enough to hold tight temperature tolerances. But here’s the catch. These lamps get incredibly hot, especially at the ends. If you cheap out on your cooling manifolds or let the airflow dip, your lamp sockets will just burn out. It’s a fragile balance, but once you get the cooling right, it’s smooth sailing. What this actually does for your floor Beyond the green credentials, this just makes the fab run better. IR systems take up way less space. Because the cycles are shorter, you can push more wafers through the line without having to buy and install more machinery. It makes the whole operation feel leaner. And if you really want to optimize, pair these systems with energy recovery units. That way, you can grab the waste heat from the cooling phase and actually use it for something else. It just makes sense.
