
Why we test every single light tube (and why you should care)
In a semiconductor fab, one tiny electrical arc or a bit of leakage current isn’t just a nuisance. It’s a disaster. It can scrap an entire batch of wafers in a heartbeat. That’s why we don’t do “batch sampling” with our clean room lighting. We don’t just test a few tubes and hope for the best. Every. Single. Unit. goes through withstand voltage (HiPot) and insulation resistance testing before it even thinks about leaving our floor.
Finding the weak spots
Here is how it works: we push each tube to its absolute voltage limit. We’re looking for the cracks. Maybe there’s a microscopic fissure in the glass or a seal that isn’t quite right. If there’s a flaw, we want it to fail now, in our factory, rather than later in your ceiling. It’s a lot cheaper to toss a tube in our bin than to deal with a shutdown in your fab. Then we check the insulation resistance. Basically, we make sure the electricity stays exactly where it belongs—inside the filament circuit. We measure the gap between the live parts and the outer shell. If the numbers are low, it usually means moisture got in or the materials are breaking down. We keep those mega-ohm values high so your chassis doesn’t become electrified.
The reality of the clean room
You need these strict standards because clean rooms are weird. Between the specialized gas mixtures and the humidity controls, electricity doesn’t always behave the way it does in a normal office. But here’s the thing… these tests can’t fix a bad installation. If your team over-tightens the sockets or uses old, frayed wiring, you’re just inviting the leakage back in. The gear you use to install the tubes has to be just as clean and reliable as the tubes themselves.
