
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Alive in High-Ceiling Shops
If you’re hanging infrared heaters 20 or 30 feet up in a factory, you’re fighting a losing battle against the environment. It’s not just about the cold. In my experience, there are two things that absolutely wreck these units: moisture and grime. When you mount a radiator that high, you aren’t just dealing with heat loss—you’re dealing with the messy reality of a working shop floor.
The Problem with Fog
Here’s the thing about industrial spaces: the temperature difference between a glowing heating element and the chilly air creates condensation. It looks like a bit of fog, but it’s actually a killer. Those tiny water droplets create “hotspots” on the surface. The quartz glass expands unevenly, and before you know it, the tube cracks or just burns out. To stop this, we use anti-fogging coatings and sealed housings. It keeps the moisture away from the emitter and stops that cycle of thermal shock from killing your gear.
Dealing with the Mess
Factory floors are chaotic. You’ve got coolant mist, oil spray, and whoever is tasked with cleaning the place. Liquid gets everywhere. A basic heater is a disaster waiting to happen. One splash of conductive liquid on the electrical terminals and pop—your breaker trips and the heat goes out. We built our chassis to be splash-proof, with heavy-duty seals around the wiring. It means if a pipe leaks overhead or someone gets a bit too enthusiastic with a pressure washer, your internals stay bone-dry. It’s a unit that can actually take a beating.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. Better sealing means less airflow around the housing. The infrared rays still get through perfectly, but the internal parts run a bit hotter than they would in an open-frame design. Because of that, you’ll want to make sure your mounting brackets are sturdy enough to handle the extra weight of the sealed housing. You don’t want to see your heaters sagging after a few months. It’s a small price to pay, though. I’d much rather deal with a heavier bracket than have to replace the whole unit every two years.
