Let’s talk about those bathroom heating lamps. They use short-wave infrared radiation, which is just a fancy way of saying they get you warm the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch: getting that instant heat without blinding everyone in the room is a bit of a balancing act. Saving your eyes Standard halogen bulbs are bright. Like, “don’t-stare-directly-at-it” bright. They throw off a lot of glare and UV rays that can be pretty harsh on the eyes. To fix this, we use quartz glass with built-in filters. This is key because it stops the glass from turning black over time. It keeps the lamp clear so the heat keeps flowing. And since this is a bathroom, things get steamy. We make sure the seal where the wires connect is completely airtight. If moisture sneaks into that filament chamber, the whole thing is toast. The trade-offs (and how to avoid a disaster) Here’s the deal: you get instant heat, but the glass gets scorching. If you touch that quartz tube, you’re going to get burned. Because of that, you can’t just slap these in anywhere. You need a solid guard or a recessed mount to keep people’s hands away from the glass. One more thing—don’t skimp on the ventilation. If the fixture can’t breathe, the heat just builds up inside and fries the wiring. Use high-temperature leads for the wiring, or you’re looking at melted insulation and a very bad day.
