
Making Bathroom Heaters That Actually Work (And Won’t Hurt Your Eyes)
Designing a bathroom heater is a bit of a tug-of-war. On one side, you want it to blast out enough heat to make a cold morning bearable. On the other, you have to make sure it doesn’t mess with someone’s eyesight. If you’re looking at heaters for wet rooms, you’ll see the “IPX5” label everywhere. Basically, that’s just a fancy way of saying the thing can take a spray of water without blowing a fuse or shorting out. It’s the bare minimum for a bathroom. The “Eye-Care” Problem Most standard infrared lamps are aggressive. They blast a wide spectrum of light that can cause a nasty glare or even strain the retinas—which is a huge deal if you’ve got babies in the house. We handle this by tweaking the tungsten filament and using a specific kind of quartz glass. It filters out those harsh blue-light peaks. The result? A much softer glow. You still get that cozy warmth on your skin, but you aren’t squinting the whole time you’re drying off. The Battle Against Steam To get that IPX5 rating, you have to seal the wiring tight. We use high-temp silicone gaskets to keep the moisture out. But here’s the catch: when you seal something that tight, the heat gets trapped inside the fixture. If the housing doesn’t have enough surface area to let that heat breathe, the internal wires will just cook themselves and burn out way too soon. It’s a delicate balance. The Little Things That Matter We usually go with a drop-in design because nobody wants to spend their weekend struggling with a complicated repair. The real enemy here is humidity. If the contact points oxidize, you’ll start seeing the lights flicker or the heat dip. We spend a lot of time making sure those connections stay clean and corrosion-free. One last thing to keep in mind: just because the light looks “soft” doesn’t mean the heat isn’t intense. You’ve still got to get the mounting height right. If the lamp is too low, that concentrated IR energy can actually irritate the skin.Measure twice, mount once.
