
Why Your Infrared Heaters Keep Shorting Out (And How to Actually Fix It)
If you’ve ever run heaters in a chicken coop or for livestock, you know it’s a nightmare for electronics. You’re dealing with thick humidity, ammonia fumes, and heaters that are constantly clicking on and off. Most of the cheap heaters you find online just can’t handle it. They fail because the seal where the wire enters the lamp gives up. Once that seal cracks, moisture creeps in, hits the electrical contact, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
The problem with “cheap” seals
Here is the thing: a lot of entry-level heaters use basic silicone or some low-grade epoxy to plug the gap between the wire and the quartz tube. That’s a recipe for disaster. When those heaters get hot, those materials oxidize. They shrink. They pull away from the glass. This creates a tiny gap that basically acts like a vacuum, sucking moisture straight into the heating element. We do things differently. We use a multi-stage process—first a high-temp ceramic bonding agent, then a vacuum-sealed silicone sleeve. It stops the seal from “breathing” (expanding and contracting), which is usually what kills the insulation in the first place.
Quality isn’t just a buzzword
You can’t just spray a waterproof coating on a budget lamp and call it a day. The lead-wire connection is where everything falls apart. If the crimp is loose or the sealant doesn’t actually bond to the quartz, the heat will literally cook the wire insulation from the inside out. To stop that, we use fluorine-based jackets on our wires. They don’t melt, and they don’t get brittle, even when the lamp is running full blast.
A quick heads-up on installation
There is one trade-off with this kind of heavy-duty sealing: the wires are stiffer. Because the seal is so robust, you can’t just bend the wires at sharp angles. If you kink them, you might actually crack the seal, which defeats the whole point of buying a waterproof heater. Just give the wires a nice, generous curve. Map out your wiring layout before you bolt everything down, and you’ll be golden.
